4th and 7th GRADE TEXAS HISTORY ESSAY CONTEST

                       In commemoration of the 175th Anniversary of the Fall of the Alamo

Essay Subjects 2010 - 2011:                                                                                     4th Grade   Fall of the Alamo

Essay Rules for all:

  • A minimum of four (4) references are needed - no more than two (2) of which may be Internet references. Bibliography/reference information should be on a separate sheet of paper.
  • Typed essays are to be double spaced on 8 ½ by 11 inch paper, using "Times New Roman" size 12 font
  • Top and bottom page margins are to be one inch, with side margins being 1.25 inches.
  • Handwritten essays are to be double spaced on 8 ½ by 11 paper.
  • Dates, e.g. March 6, 1836 and names, eg Sam Houston, shall be counted as one word.
  • Items not counted in word count are: title, cover sheet information, and bibliography/reference.
  • All essays must be submitted in English.

 4th Grade

  • The body of the 4th grade essay can be no less than 1 ½ pages and no more than 2 pages.
  • The body of the 4th grade essay must be between 500 and 525 words

7th Grade

  • The body of the 7th grade essay can be no less than 2 ½ pages and no more than 3 pages. ,
  • The body of the 7th grade essay must be between 800 and 825 words.

 

Awards Ceremony will be held April 12, 2011, 12:30 pm, at the Alamo Hall.

  • All participants receive honorary certificates
  • All participating Teachers receive a "Texas" book
  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners - Engraved Sterling Silver "Alamo" Necklace (Girls) OR

Engraved Bone Handled "Alamo" Knife (Boys)

  • 1st Place - Flag flown over the Alamo presented to the winners AND a Plaque honoring winners presented to their Schools
  • Teachers of 1st place winners receive Brunch for Two at the Menger Hotel.
  • The 1st Place winner will be invited to attend DRT convention (held in San Antonio this year). DRT is not responsible for expenses incurred by the student to attend Convention; however, the student and up to 2 guests will be guests of the DRT at the Historical Evening Dinner.
  • First Place winners will advance to state competition and have the chance to win numerous monetary awards
