OUTSTANDING TEXAS HISTORY 4th AND 7th GRADE TEACHER CONTEST RULES
The
teacher applicant should prepare an application that includes the following information (see attached sample)
- 1.
Cover Sheet should include:
- a. Teacher's name
- b. Name of School, School District, and City
- c. Name
of Principal
- d. "Daughters of the Republic of Texas"
- e. The Sponsoring DRT Chapter and City (Alamo
Mission Chapter, San Antonio)
- f. Chapter contact person and Telephone number
- 2. Letters
of recommendation, limit of four, one page each
- 3. Teacher applicant's vita/resume
- 4.
Applicant should submit his/her thoughts about teaching Texas History, manner of instructions
in the classroom,
innovations conceived and executed for 7th and/or 4th grades, and response of
students.
This should be typed on 8 ½ by 11 paper.
Honors and Awards:
Awards Ceremony
will be held April 12, 2011, 12:30 pm, at the Alamo Hall where he/she will be recognized.
Additionally,
the winning teacher will be invited to attend the DRT Convention to be held in May 2011 (in San Antonio).
The teacher
and a guest (1) will be guests of the DRT at the Historical Evening Dinner. Any other expenses incurred
by the
teacher's attending this event will be the teacher's responsibility.

Texas History Essay Contests for 4th and 7th Grade Students and Outstanding Texas History
Teachers
In support of the education of Texas history in our Texas schools, public and private, to maintain
accuracy and interest with our leaders of tomorrow, the Alamo Mission Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas cordially
invites your District to participate in the 2010-11 Texas History Essay Contests for 4th and 7th grade students.
These contests offer unique opportunities for students to fulfill TAKS objectives and to extend classroom activities
for a real world purpose. These contests are open to ALL 4th and 7th grade students studying Texas
history including those participating in Gifted and Talented programs.
Teachers are asked to rank their top 5 student essays and submit
them as per the enclosed rules no later than January 30, 2011. All participating students will receive
Certificates of Achievement at an awards ceremony on the grounds of our historic Alamo. In addition, Chapter
winners will receive keepsake prizes, a flag flown over the Alamo, and the opportunity to compete at the state level.
Teachers of 1st place winners
will receive Gift Certificates for brunch at the historic Menger Hotel. The 1st place
winners will advance to the state competition.
State student winners
receive an additional cash prize of $300.
History teachers of 4th and 7th grade students are invited to participate in
an essay contest as well. State winners will receive an invitation to the DRT Convention in May 2011.
State winners receive recognition and cash prizes of $700 each. The State winning teachers’
schools will each receive a cash prize of $1,000. Alamo Mission Chapter winners will each receive
$500.00. Teachers and/or students who wish to participate are asked to return an enclosed post card.
A DRT Committee member will then make a personal contact directly with the participating teacher. Please
